I answered a call to student artists who have received special recognition to submit their work and information to Art Calendar Magazine and I have been selected for their March 2010 issue!!
I submitted images from my latest stop-motion animation, Ino (made with generous support from the Princess Grace Foundation), and my last hand-drawn animation Morning Bird.
I can't stress enough how valuable networking & new media has been in getting my name out there this year! And I'm always learning more.

The First Steps

This is how I start an animation:

-Lots of sketching all preliminary impressions, shot compositions usually, ideas, and looking back through sketchbooks and journals and scraps of paper to find those fleeting great ideas and bring them into the fold. [For this animation I had been sort of rolling these iconic images and memories from my past around for years. I started by just aiming to make comic-book kind of visual representations of these memories and build outward.]

-This particular animation will be drawn, so I'm starting to figure out the stylistic issues of drawing.

-Looking at the pool of images or text bits and seeing what, exactly, the story is that I'm trying to tell.

-Filling in the blanks and looking for narrative threads.

-Ordering these random snippets of imagery and shooting it to just see it in some small amount of movement---That's what this video clip is----it helps me start to think of it as a film rather than a bunch of random stuff in my sketchbook.

-Next will be sharing it and getting feedback, hammering out timing and getting an actual firm storyboard, making a pass at audio content, then shooting a timed animatic.

-Then...filling in a lot of blanks!

My current project, just coming into being, tentatively called "Lily Job" will be much more narrative and graphically inspired than my other animated work.

Loving my new studio space and really can't wait to spend more time down there! My first project in the space is this year's crazy alien headpiece for Halloween. These tentacle/horns will be fully incorporated into a wig piece for the final costume..more pix once I get that cookin'... Best month all year! (Last year's Miss Piggy headpiece is in the background there! That was my first foray into making my own costume latex pieces...but it's so much more fun to be scary!)

An electric animal party! Unique sculptural masks went up into the Dame window last week! The streetlamp was too much competition for the blacklight I had planned on using to really amp up the otherworldly scene- but the final install still looks great. Check it out! The most fun was the praying mantis...she is gonna getcha.

Maybe the most deceptive shot in-camera, one that took some real work. It really comes across as a large depth of space. The mountains are a split hide of suede leather, and it just melts away in the picture. You can also see the ocean rig and the moon arm here. Will post the film image next...

Outside the frame, there was an awful lot going on- anything and everything used to balance, prop, light, jab, and fake the shot. You can see the in-camera composition that shows up in the first half of the film on the monitor in this last picture (and the Laurell K. Hamilton books used to move the rock up on the left of the screen & the christmas lights that made the pink glow).

Rogue Femme is back with the rest of Dryad's Saddle from Faerieworlds 2009. The festival's last-minute move out of the Secret House Winery location seemed to really throw off the organization and vibe of the event and all of the vendors suffered for it. Irregardless, we camped and sold for four days outside of Eugene, OR and got to meet a lot of creative people-- like our booth neighbor, author Carolyn Turgeon and friend Barbara, and the organizer of the record-breaking Seattle Zombie March, Eric Pope, and the heaven-sent water fairy and screen-printer Del.

The left-over boot cuff stock that came back from the festival will be posting on my Etsy store within the month! And thanks to everyone that bought our wares at the festival- it was great to meet you all and see our art go to good folks.
Here's what the world looked like last weekend:

After a long day well over 100 degrees at Mt. Pisgah, before circling up with a group of young girls to trade object manipulation tricks. I learned some contact juggling and got to teach the magic of the flow wand to some very awsome young ladies barely taller than the thing itself. A highlight.

In heavy last minute production for Ino, my current stop-motion animation. It has certainly been testing my patience, stamina, inventiveness, and courage. When one thing doesn't work, seventeen other things also stop working. I'm on my feet for many hours a time, the puppet breaks, my movement I spent two hours on looks horrible once I view it, I bump the camera, something falls, the lighting doesn't work, I end up covered in glitter and feeling very defeated!
I have pure respect for animators who have made this method their primary vehicle for film making. It is a very unforgiving medium!
All that said- When something works, and the lights glow and the set sparkles and some movement comes together that just looks magical even to you, the maker, there is really no other artistic reward like it.

I am so happy to announce that Morning Bird, my animation completed last year, will be screening at its first festival this week at the South Beach International Animation Film Festival. Sadly, we just returned from sunny Miami and won't be able to attend-- but hopefully this is the first of many festival acceptances of my films!
Morning Bird was born out of such a specific and intensely personal time that was so rich with emotion and imagery-- This animation seems to have been the culmination and end-point of mining that era. It is hard to imagine a simpler and more personal story from that point in time. It's wonderful to have it out in the world speaking other things to different people. One of the real joys of film making.

My purple fringe bag down at DAME has sold! (Thanks, d.!) And will be featured in an upcoming Stuff at Night photoshoot March 10th featuring DAME doing spring jumpsuits for evening inspired by the runway! Super good looks went over to Stuff and I'm very stoked to see one of my bags in print! Linx to that once it comes out.
Eyes open for my upcoming DAME window display change...should be fun. We're also getting our hands on more excellent vintage for spring and summer that will show up in the shop very soon.
And hopefully one of the below designs I pitched to the Fenway Institute will be used in their upcoming ad campaign for a very important study.

Late at night, when the clothing at DAME comes to life....
Stopping traffic on South Street with the lovely Sally B. in the unfinished window, modeling the most perfect dress we'd seen...lots of women looked at this dress and nearly fainted, but after Sally put it on, she knew it was hers...Moral: if you love it, get it!

I floated all the elements off transparent line for this window. 3D golden arrows with red feathers, frilly golden heart, hot orange window paint (can you tell I have always hoped to moonlight as an automotive pinstriper?), flowers from Spruce, vintage wallpaper heart cut-outs from Etsy (sorry, don't know the shop name!), red gel on the spotlight, and a very sexy undergarment. Swing by and see it!

Dame had a beautiful successful opening yesterday at 68 South St. in Jamaica Plain. We worked hard all day Friday to tag, price and stage the whole store. Saturday saw a huge amount of great business and we toasted and toasted again with champagne last night in celebration. Today the fantastic folks from Salmagundi up the block showed their support-- A great thing coming from great people at a great shop that we LOVE. Dany must be beside herself. TO DAME! She and I already can't wait til our next buying adventure....

Kinky circus theme for Chubrub Productions and XGender at The Neighborhood this summer. I hand painted and built all the props and backgrounds for this event on a no-budget budget. This is when it comes in handy to 1) Have a lot of stuff sitting around my studio 2) Have a lot of vision and 3) Be able to pick up a paintbrush/glue gun/wig and do something great with it. Sally B. and Clare helped finesse and create thematic games and Steph Plourde-Simard took these photos that night.

A shot from the newly finished mural work I did over at DAME. The mural is meant to reflect the overall aesthetic vision of clean yet organic, vintage yet polished. This look started when I figured out the custom font for the logo, inspired by the vision of the owner, and is continuing in every little touch we throw into the retail location.

A still from an initial test. The backdrop is a multi-layer system with moveable elements to create twinkling stars from shot to shot, and the moon I sculpted in clay then hand cast in latex and backlit. In motion, the articulated hand puppet blots out the moon, and the stars twinkle in the sky... A great start to the project.

Congratulations to BFA candidate Erica Lisette Murphy who has been named a 2008–2009 Princess Grace Honorarium Recipient for Film. Presented by the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, the Princess Grace Awards continue the legacy of Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, who anonymously helped emerging artists pursue their goals throughout her lifetime.

Ranging from scholarships, fellowships, and honorable mention grants, artists are nominated for distinction in the areas of theater, dance, and film by their college, university, or not-for-profit theater/dance company.

Each year, the Foundation awards funds to a select group of students and emerging artists who exemplify both classical and alternative artistic disciplines and, while still considered emerging talent, they are already distinguished in their areas of expertise.

Here's a side most folks don't see of me. But it's certainly my root! My dad (his blog is listed in my links) instilled a whimsical sensibility in me and my artwork early on. Much of his work uses anthropomorphized creatures in mischievous or funny poses, and a colorful prismacolor palette- all of which situates perfectly into a slightly underhandedly crooked children's book style. So it was at his urging (and Jillian Crider's) that I tried my hand at a great format, the ACEO (a trading card size format). These pieces all went on sale on ebay last year, where an ACEO following has been exploding over the past few years. It's a great outlet for my lighter, more illustrative side. Sometimes while working on a big animation project, or when I'm heavy into something else, I'll run off a little playful ACEO to lighten things up.

Behind the Scenes - DAME Bio

DAME never could have gotten off the ground without the help of several great people. Lisette has been instrumental in the execution of the DAME concept from buying to logo development to PR Materials. She is one of the most talented people I've ever met. Here she is in her own words:

I am a west coast transplant to JP via the rural south. My artistic exploits are truly a result of a similarly wide range of influences, a fevered alchemical combination of processes that all inform one another. I started life in the theatre, and now work primarily as an independent animator. But any given day I also have my hands deep in some form of costuming, photography and graphic design. Transformation of objects and spaces from the mundane to the deliciously dramatic is where my artistic heart is. Whether I'm locked in my studio for days on end creating another world frame by frame, casting latex masks, or orchestrating a really rock and roll vintage fashion photo shoot- all my work seeks to amplify some excellent transformation to a heightened aesthetic experience. I've had an artist's field day shopping, designing and photographing for Dame this year. Beautiful women and men in beautiful vintage clothing under the umbrella of such a solid aesthetic vision-- and I was able to exercise so many different skills throughout the development of the brand (logo design, font decisions, the business card, the clothing tags, and numerous shoots and fliers)-- And it's really awesome to get to contribute to another independent JP woman's fantastic work! The artistic headshot. I've used these print-ready shots for everything from press releases to resumes to online networking. The abilility to select from these differences in flavor and tone can really convey a message about yourself that words alone will not. I'm a big proponent of everyone having a collection of these taken for their own use. Whether you want vampy or artistic or mysterious or serious or youthful or older- the right headshot taken by someone who can bring these things out in you for a photo is a must.

I've had the pleasure to work with Dany this year on visual aspects (and more!) of DAME Vintage. Together we figured out the right font families for the brand, and I created a custom font for the DAME logo. Soon I'll post the other design work I've done for DAME which include custom hang-tags featuring the custom logo, and a beautiful folding business card. I still work with Dany, and we're hoping to put together a fall photoshoot featuring Dame clothes and gals and my photography soon. Blogroll on the right links up with what she's all about. Countdown to Change: Custom Graphic for PPCNC 2008 mailers

Both created using hand drawing, scanning and Illustrator.

For the past four or five years I've been creating artwork for Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina's Action Fund for their annual fundraising event around the New Year. Typically, I've created these pieces entirely by hand, but this year I ventured into a digital process. I like the blend of my hand rendered style and the vectorized quality.

These were some of the most recent designs, and as we lurch toward election day, I thought they were timely.

Very rock & roll.

The file size I'm able to publish these pictures with on this blog is pretty small, so much of the detail on this beautiful poster is lost. The theme was dirty circus, and the poster drove the point home. This used a lot of Photoshop manipulation and drawing in Illustrator along with some custom font work. The end result was totally worth it. A really dynamic poster for a really energetic dirty circus night. I built and painted photo backdrops and props of circus performers and a big top for this night as well.

DJ D'hana Press Kit

Here's a thumbnail of the press kit I made for DJ D'hana. The "kit" is a long scrolling pdf file which reveals itself as the recipient reads down. I made some stylized changes to the Chubrub pre-existing skull-with-afro logo, but the rest of the design is all original. D'hana let me run with the idea of her aesthetic and business for this piece. D'hana's bio photo is by Steph Plourde Simard (http://www.stephplourdesimard.com/index2.php), another friend and local artist. Created in Illustrator and Photoshop.

Over a year in development, Morning Bird has finally found a place in the world.

This animation was selected for the juried SMFA Film and Animation Annual Show at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and was largely responsible for my selection as a 2008 Princess Grace Foundation Honorarium Recipient in Film and Animation.

3D Black Light Art at Salem's 13 Ghosts

I recently finished a project at Salem's 13 Ghosts (the posting title links to their page) as a 3D black light artist. Interestingly, this is nothing I've done before. But that doesn't usually keep me from much. Owner Penny Vandell was good enough to take a shot on me, and I think I did a bang up job out there. You walk through the attraction wearing 3D glasses and the images, like my vortex on the floor, appear to pop out from the surface. Working in Salem at an "haunted attraction" is such a little kid dream of mine- I hope to take on more gigs in that arena. If only my 9 year old self could see me now!

This is the animation that first synthesized my theatre background with film making. The shadow puppets were both articulated and created in multiples: so both hinged movement within the puppet and replacers could be shot frame by frame to achieve the illusion of fluid movement while the live model's image flickers and pixelates. If I were to do it over again? I'd remove the silly paper clouds... But on the other hand, this was a highly experimental piece that established a lot of themes for future work.
